SKÅNE AUSTRALIAN
FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Aussie Rules Football
Australian Football has existed in Sweden since 1993 with the founding of the Helsingborg Saints (briefly known as South Sweden Saints from 2003 to 2006). Since 1994 the Saints have been playing in the Danish Australian Football League. A second side from Sweden, Lund Bulldogs joined DAFL in 1995 but lasted only half a season.
It wasn’t until 2003 we saw new Swedish teams being founded, Gothenburg Berserkers and in 2004 Stockholm Dynamites. Also Skåne founded their own local league with the birth of Lund Magpies, Helsingborg West Raptors, and Port Malmö Maulers, with the best players making up the Saints team in DAFL.
In 2006 Port Malmö decided to leave the Skåne League to prepare their entry into DAFL’s Premier League by going into a three-way regional series against Gothenburg and newly formed Landskrona Bulldozers. Two new Malmö teams were created to replace them in the Skåne League, GV Rebels and Malmö Red Eyes.
2007 saw DAFL host the second Swedish side, Port Malmö which made an immediate impact by going all the way to the Grand Final. In the Skåne League, Lund Magpies folded, which were replaced by Landskrona and leaving Helsingborg West as the only original founding team in the Skåne League
In 2009 saw both Helsingborg West and Landskrona dropping out of the Skåne League. Their replacement saw the birth of Limhamn Lions, meaning the Skåne League was based entirely of Malmö teams.
2010 saw again changes, with GV folding to make way for South Malmö Bloods. Both Helsingborg West and Landskrona have returned with new team Påarp Kickers in the newly created North West Skåne League.
The Swedish national team is represented by the Swedish Elks.
